New book coming out 7 September

Quiet Desperation, Part 1 on Smashwords

I know I need to be actively marketing this but I’m a little shy about putting it on favebook–it’s scary–very personal–the word document comes to about 120 pages of my life–some of which was very painful.

Some parts of this I’ve been working on this off & on for maybe 20 years, & I’m worried that it’s only important to me, & other people will find it boring or silly, or laughable.

Python Ciphers

Three ciphers I have implemented in python:

Beaufort Cipher in Ascii

This is the famous historical Vigenère-like cipher, but encrypts letters, numbers, and punctuation; also capable of using numbers/punctuation in the key.

This algorithm use the key to generate a hash (sha 512) instead of just using the letters as in the original cipher; this increases the key length considerably, hopefully increasing security as well.

example:
Plaintext: This secret message was sent at 2100 UTC
key linux

Ciphertext:

&IdtZ )a@gu _4e(t #hupy fakxl O@~?H x879M

decryption mode:

Thiss ecret messa gewas senta t2100 UTCxx

Code Name: Obsidian

This is my own algorithm, a digraphic cipher (encrypts two letters at a time), and uses an integer as a key:

Plaintext: This secret message was sent at 2100 UTC

key: 712815

Ciphertext:

ot<g( n@a.b 5NJn. u)b*u (n}p) uCkHq D”GEL O[GFU

decryption mode:

Thiss ecret messa gewas senta t2100 UTCHD ]B%OY

Random characters are added whenever the length of the message is not a multiple of ten.

Dinumeric Encryption

This is also an original digraphic algorithm, using an integer as a key, but outputs numbers.

Plaintext: This secret message was sent at 2100 UTC

key: 13245

Ciphertext:

6674 7650 7488 7325 4538 4664 7500 4869 4542 4882 7488 4290 4880 1541 1622 4395 6193 3412

decryption mode:

Thiss ecret messa gewas senta t2100 UTC@; cQnkZ

Periparoba

I have been wondering about this plant for years, because one day it suddenly seemed to show up on the back patio, growing through cracks in the pavement.

Now, not only have I identified it, I have eaten it.

Here in Brazil it is known as PariparobaPiper umbellatum, and apparently has many medicinal uses

Some photographs I’ve taken in the past few years:

Solange took about three of the leaves, cut them into small pieces, cooked them in butter, milk, nutmeg and salt.

Lonomia Caterpillar

Lonomia sp.(?)

Lonomia sp.(?)

Yesterday we literally had to pry about five of these off the goiaba tree as they were eating leaves. Solange accidently brushed her arm against one & screamed in pain.

Although the photographs of Lonemia obliqua I’ve found on the internet seem to have different colors, the hairs on this one have the same shape.

It kinda scared me because Lonemia obliqua is deadly, more toxic than snakebite. Brazil has several deaths every year, & it is apparently not a pleasant way to die.

Christmas in November

“If I could work my will,” said Scrooge indignantly, “every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips [before Thanksgiving], should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!”

Asperger’s Symbol

Found this on Wrongplanet last night:

A possible symbol for Asperger’s Syndrome:

The “Teardrop-Spoked Asterisk”, Unicode character U+273B
HTML Code: ✻
Possibilities for jewelry, clothes, etc.
I was intrigued.

Chocolate & Heat

The weather has been getting hotter…I ‘needed’ to buy some chocolate & all the chocolate bars at Supermercado de Sao Paulo were soft, like they’d been sitting out in the sun.

No air conditioning there except for freezers & coolers…& I’ve heard that the owner turns those off at night in order to save money.

Upcoming Election

Hopefully the American people will have the sense not to elect this Romney person, but, then again, I never thought they could possibly relect Bush, & boy, was I wrong.
